Waymo

A ride with no one in the front seat

Waymo, UX100 leader in Automotive

Waymo’s rider app has to earn trust that a driver used to provide. The car on the map, the door, and the trip are designed so the absence is not a surprise.

Visit Waymo

Design

You see the vehicle approach, you unlock a specific door, and the trip’s state is always on screen. The interface narrates what a person would have said.

Impact

Rider-only mobility became an ordinary errand in the cities where it runs. The app is what makes that ordinary.

How it works

Request, match, walk to the car the screen is showing, and ride. Support is in the trip, because there is no driver to ask.

Why it won

Automotive UX in 2026 was still about the person at the wheel. Waymo won by designing the ride without one.

Journal

The case above is the record. The blog has a separate essay for each year Waymo led Automotive.
